10. Analemmatic (or
human) Sundial
This sundial is sited on
a high grassy area near to where Mr Hornimans house once stood.
The gnomon is the
observer who casts a shadow on to the horizontal scale. Instead of hour lines,
it has an elliptical arrangement of slabs, acting as hour points. There is a
central pavement, aligned N-S, on which months are marked.
By standing on the
centre line by the current month, you can read the time from your own shadow,
which is cast on to or between the numbered slabs This dial, like No.4 is not
calibrated for Greenwich, but summer time.
