A seven-week course that will help develop your story
telling potential Saturdays 22nd October to 3rd December 10am to
12.30pm
Run by 'Here For Good' in partnership with Lewisham
Council
WE ALL TELL STORIES...
Everybody loves a story - we tell them all the time. We
share them at work and at home and when we meet our friends in the pub. We tell
them to our children as we put them to bed or when warning them about
strangers. We use them in speeches or when pitching for a job. They help us
make our case, bolster our opinion and win the support of others. Not least, we
use them to entertain.
COULD WE TELL THEM BETTER?
Throughout the ages, both children and adults have
loved a good story. From ancient times till now, popularity and respect has
been heaped on those who can tell them - yet how often do we take time to
deliberately develop our storytelling skills? These workshops provide training
in the art of story telling over a seven week period. Friendly and supportive,
they are run by enthusiasts, passionate about stories.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The course is for anyone who wants to improve their
storytelling abilities. Parents wanting to settle the children at night will
benefit as much as business people wanting to make better presentations. It is
for anyone who wants to tell stories better.
WHY COME?
Gaining a sense of mastery in the art of storytelling
boosts a person's confidence, adds to their skills and develops their
personality. Also, it has a knock-on effect on all areas of that persons
verbal communication. By coming on the course, you will get the chance to
develop your storytelling skills and get plenty of feedback and
encouragement.
Sessions will include:
-
Instructions, suggestions and ideas to help people discover their storytelling
potential
- An
opportunity for discussion
- A
chance for group members to develop their storytelling skills through
participation and feedback
-
Storytelling presentations
The course will include the following modules:
STORIES: HOW TO FIND THEM AND MAKE THEM YOUR
OWN
Whether events happened yesterday or 100 years ago, you
need to find your own way of telling them! There are stories alt
around you, just waiting to be told. Discover the art of making a story your
own, and finding your own voice to tell it.
SECRETS OF THE FAIRYTALE
Some stories resonate through the years, enthralling
one generation after another - but what is it that ensures their continued
success? This session considers the many components common to all
fairytales.
THE HERO'S JOURNEY
What do the stories of Homers Odyssey, Star Wars
and Lord Of The Rings have in common? They all have a hero who makes his way
from the world of normality, through much ordeal and eventually back home
again. An awareness of this pattern can strengthen your own storytelling.
REGAINING A LOST ART
The custom of handing down stories from one generation
to another is a traditional aspect of many cultures - but some people do it
better than others and its something we can all improve on.
TIPS ON TELLING
Discover how the use of body language can add to your
delivery in creating tension and suspense. The dramatic use of a pause can also
add to what you say. A slight gesture with the hand, the lowering of the head,
a raising of the eyebrows can help drive a story home.
STAND AND DELIVER
In order to gain an effective command of the techniques
common to all storytelling, group members will be encouraged to master the
telling of one story in particular. it may be drawn from personal experience or
the pages of a book. At the end of the course youll be invited to stand
and deliver a 5-7 minute tale to a friendly room of invited guests. Preparation
towards this will run throughout the seven weeks.
